A Kentucky Derby Celebration at Geneva Inn

Kentucky DerbyWanting to experience some Southern hospitality and Kentucky Derby fun without leaving Lake Geneva? We have you covered. Geneva Inn is hosting their annual Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday May 3rd, 2014 at 3:00 pm. There is no better place to spend a spring afternoon in Lake Geneva – while placing bets and enjoying frosty mint juleps guests will have an unparalleled view of the lake in a restaurant so swanky and plush, you might just think you’re in a luxury suite at Churchill Downs. Feast on classic Southern fare, bid in a silent auction, and buy raffle tickets for an afternoon and evening . The cost is $30 per person and proceeds benefit Partners for Progress.

And now, so you can make educated bets and looks your best, some top picks for your perfect Derby day.

WHO TO WAGER ON-  The undefeated California Chrome with odds of 7-4 is the obvious favorite.  If you’re wanting to take a risk Danza with odds of 8-1 might have a chance at the roses as well.  My personal pick is Wicked Strong who won the Wood Memorial and has odds of 8-1.  For a complete list of contenders, go HERE.

LADIES, GRAB YOUR HATS- Nothing tops off a derby day outfit like the perfect hat.  THIS website has some of my favorites (and they understand the importance of rush delivery).  If you’re looking for some fashion inspiration, check THIS out.

SOME DINNER CONVERSATION- With a tradition as old as the Derby, there are bound to be lots of interesting stories and history.  HERE is a good recap on some of the basics.

Delavan Lake Sky Circus

Delavan’s 1st ever Sky Circus on Ice has all the ingredients for a perfect winter weekend in Wisconsin.  Professional kite performances, ice sculptures, snowman building and great food and drinks are only a few of the things you will find when you attend this weekend long celebration taking place Friday February 14th through Monday February 17th at Lake Lawn Resort.

As mesmerizing as a ballet in the sky, professional kite performances are sure to be the highlight of this years event.   Presented by Gift of Wings, this event brings in professional kite fliers from all over the world, as they dazzle spectators with a choreographed display of kites and music.  Spectators will also have the opportunity to try their hand at kite flying in different demonstrations set up around Lake Lawn and attendees are encouraged to bring their own kites as well.    This is an event you won’t want to miss – and although the displays will be visible for miles around, experiencing the kites up close makes for an experience that is truly unique.  Those who have seen the kite performances in the past have described them as being similar to the Blue Angels Air Show, only with kites.   Kite performances will take place both Saturday and Sunday and begin at 10 am and last until about 5 pm.

Guests will even get a chance to take lessons from the “Kite Whisperer” himself Brett Williams in one on one lessons.  Different experts will be on hand letting kite enthusiasts in on tricks of the trade.  There will also be kites on hand provided by Gift of Wings for those who do not have their own.

Finally, prepare to be amazed by Connor Doran, a top 12 finalist on the tv show America’s Got Talent.  Doran captivates audiences with his indoor kite flying, in which he creates an air flow for the kites with only body movements.  Doran, who was diagnosed with epilepsy at age four has been touting the therapeutic benefits of kite flying his entire life.  His performance is an eyeopening one you’ll have to see to believe.

If your neck gets tired from looking up at beautiful kites – don’t fret.  Their will be plenty of beauty to take in at ground level as well.  Presented by WinterFun Inc., the top ice sculptors from Illinois and Wisconsin will be creating magnificent works of art using only ice, snow, and water.  The 300 pound blocks of ice will be transformed into beautiful circus themed sculptures.  Get an up close look at how these intricate piece of art are made.  Sculpting will take place Friday through Monday, with an award given to the best sculpture on Monday.

There will also be ice sculpting demonstrations taking place in Downtown Delavan from Tower Park to the Delavan Post Office.

Attendees of this years Sky Circus on Ice are going to have plenty to do – while not taking in art and kites, participants will be able to snowshoe and cross country ski around beautiful Lake Lawn.  There will also be an area designated for snowman building.   Plenty of concessions will be set up around Lake Lawn so guests can warm up with hot cocoa and their favorite foods.    Make sure you contact Lake Lawn for their special hotel packages for those wishing to attend the Sky Circus on Ice – call 262-728-5095.

Fire and Ice Lounge at the Baker House

The Baker House Ice Bar

The Baker House Ice Bar

The hottest place to be at Lake Geneva’s 2014 Winterfest might be a bit cooler than you expected – so cool in fact, it’s ice.  The Baker House is once again turning their front garden into Wisconsin’s first ever ice bar.  Right in the center of all the Winterfest action, belly up to a 10 foot bar sculpted completely out of ice by award winning artist Max Zuleta.   Drinks are served by “Ice Angels” in glasses made completely of ice.  Patrons are encouraged cozy up by the fire pits on fur covered benches or they may go inside to the heated wrap around porch to warm up.

An array of food and cocktails will be available.  Highlights include a Skyy Vodka ice luge (perfect for shot taking), snow cones topped with fun flavored Skyy Vodka infusions, and of course an array of Baker House Hot Toddy’s.  The Fire & Ice Lounge will be open on weekends for the month of February – or until mother nature puts an end to the fun. With stunning views of Lake Geneva and an atmosphere of days past that simply cannot be duplicated, this is a must see.  Call the Baker House at 262-248-4700 for more details.

Dining in Lake Geneva: Wrigley Drive Hot Spots

Popeyes on Lake Geneva

Popeyes on Lake Geneva

With Lake Geneva’s Annual Winterfest days away, it’s time to finalize your plans – and you won’t want to miss a meal at any one of these beautiful restaurants on Wrigley Drive.    Right in the middle of all the the festive excitement, the below options will allow you to grab a warm meal all while still being able to view the ice sculpting and bustle of the crowd right across the street.  So take a look and see where you’d like to dine on Wrigley Drive during Winterfest 2014.

The Vibe:  Popeyes is the sort of old-school restaurant you’d expect to find on Lake Geneva.  The atmosphere is warm and nautical, and the panoramic windows give a great view of The Riviera and the beach.  The staff is some of the best and most attentive in town, and dining there is a real pleasure.

What to Order:  Popeyes is renown for their outdoor rotisserie.  Their chicken, lamb, and pulled pork is always fresh and mouthwateringly delicious.  In my opinion their broccoli cheese soup is a must, and their bloody Mary’s are the absolute best in town.

History:  Popeyes was opened in 1972 by Nick and Veronica Anagnos.  Popeyes Galley and Grog started as a very small restaurant, specializing in fish & chips and ice cold beer.  In 1978 the restaurant expanded, and in 1985 they added the now famous outdoor rotisserie.

The Vibe:  Scuttlebutt’s is a homey, warm sort of restaurant that might make you think you’re eating on someone’s three-seasons porch right on Lake Geneva.  The traditional Swedish fare sets it apart from other restaurants in the area and you can expect food to be come quickly with the efficient and warm wait staff making the experience that much more enjoyable.

What to Order:  The Swedish pancakes with lingon berries are wonderful.   Scuttlebutt’s has also garnered a lot of praise for their Friday Fish Fry (voted best in town!)  Also, trying their home-made barbecue sauce is highly recommended (you can buy your own bottle too!) You can expect fresh, quickly served meals with large portion sizes.

History: Opened in 1985 by Steve and Emily Sundberg, the restaurant is a mix of Steve’s Swedish History and Emily’s midwest roots.

The Vibe:  The newest addition to Wrigley Drive is none other than Barrique Wine and Brew Bar.  Enjoy a laid back atmosphere with a glass of sangria on the restaurant’s balcony or sample a glass of wine in the beautifully decorated bar.  The decor is slightly modern and warmly eclectic.  Also, come prepared to learn – Barrique’s knowledgeable staff can answer any questions you might have on wine or beer.

What to Order:  Think light fare fit to share with a group of friends. The charcuterie plate is divine, paired with some seasonal wine, but their salads are all the rave as well.  Also, bring the little ones along, Barrique offers a great kid’s menu. Prices are reasonable, so sampling different wine and craft beers won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

History:  Barrique opened in June 2013 by owner Tom Trilla.  He has 30 + years of experience in not only the wine industry, but in management as well.  His goal has always been to blend people and wine, which is made very clear upon visiting Barrique.

The Vibe:   Think old-school diner with a nautical twist.  It’s tiny, adorable, and no-frills.  The sort of place you an eat a delicious breakfast al fresco or grab an evening cocktail and enjoy some people watching on the streets of Lake Geneva.  If you’d rather grab something on the go, Speedos is the place to stop – their walk-up window makes getting delicious food quick and easy.

What to Order:  For breakfast, their skillets are hard to beat.  Their patty melts are equally scrumptious.  But one of my favorite ways to enjoy Speedos is with a simple pina colada al fresco.

History:  Speedos is owned by Mr. Spyro “Speedo” Condos, the former mayor Lake Geneva.
